How Can Changing Your Lifestyle Help With Fertility
How does our Lifestyle Contribute to Fertility
As you’ve heard in the discussions above, fertility greatly varies in different parts of the world, with significantly less decline in women aged 30-40 in Thailand than in Finland. As well as this, even the “norm” of sperm motility has significantly reduced over the last 30 years throughout the world. This can likely be attributed to the changes in our lifestyle. From the chronic stress of our hectic day to day life, to physical inactivity, and a diet of highly processed and pro-inflammatory foods, we are quite literally attacking our body. This chronic low grade inflammation directly effects both our eggs and sperm and contributes to fertility issues.
What Are the Evidence-Based Recommendations for People Trying to Conceive?
Diet - Eat a whole food plant-based diet high in fibre. Take folate and vitamin b12 supplementation
Exercise - Try to be as active as possible in your day, ensuring a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity 5 days a week
Stress - Using stress relieving measures such as exercise, mindfulness, meditation, yoga etc to ensure you feel relaxed and content
Sleep - Getting good quality and good quantity of sleep every night
Social Connection - Ensuring you have a supportive environment with your partner and social circle
Avoiding Harmful substances - avoid smoking, alcohol and drugs
Hopefully from the expert talk and advice above you’ve seen just how important these aspects of your life are on your fertility and overall health and placing them as a priority should be your first-line treatment, whether it be that you’re just starting out, or alongside medical fertility investigations and treatment, the evidence is clear that this will help you along your way.
